How to Obtain Your Official Marriage License:

Before the wedding you'll need to apply for your marriage license through the circuit court.  For Virginia weddings, you may do this at ANY county circuit court; not necessarily the county where you will be married.

You will need to go together (both bride and groom) to apply for the license.  The license must be used within 60 days of filing.  Please make certain to give the license to Brian during one of your final meetings leading up to the wedding.

The folder of information and certificates you receive from Brian on your wedding day are purely ceremonial.

The circuit court of the county where you filed for your marriage license is the keeper of your official marriage license.

Brian will sign your marriage license once the ceremony has been performed and will immediately mail it to the circuit court where you obtained the license.  At that time the clerk of the circuit court will enter your marriage license into the county record and it will be possible for you to obtain a formal copy.

You have to request a copy of your marriage license directly from the circuit court.

Most jusrisdictions generally charge a minimal fee for a certified copy of your license.

It is this certified copy that you will use for changing your name, etc.
